Over the span of 2 years, ‘Ode to Wheels’ is the first book in a trilogy of love poems inspired by my nephew's favorite things. Working on this project with my older sibling who is a Montessori-trained educator.
Our goals for this book include:
-High-contrast pictures for the youngest listeners
-A non-fantastical story that will help little ones build their understanding of the real world
-Pictures of animals, young children, and other classic baby favorites that will engage a young listener in the story
And for the reader, even the simplest book, ideally has
-Few words per page and a nice rhythm that make it easy to read over and over
-A little artistry and humor that make it fun to read over and over... and over
We‘ve incorporated all these characteristics in ‘Ode to Wheels’ with the hope that we can help parents and other caregivers enjoy reading to their little ones a bit more while the little ones get the most of the experience.
As a young designer I was given the trust to create something I'd never done before. It was empowering and challenging to say the least. Over the course of a few years we planned the book, figured out how we want to print it, fundraising, and getting a published book. It was a great experience laying out spreads and seeing the entire process of book publishing. I was challenged to illustrate and layout the book, I gained great experience editing and having print ready files.
